ABOUT
HISTORY
The George Mason University Indoor Drumline (GMUID) was founded in the fall of 2007 by Dr. Michael Nickens and Chris Martin as an effort to expand the reach of the marching percussion activity and bring an independent, indoor percussion ensemble to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. In its inaugural season, the drumline finished 7th in the 2009 WGI Percussion Independent Open (PIO) finals, a tremendous achievement.
From there, the ensemble has undergone constant growth. In 2012, GMUID won the WGI PIO World Championship with their program, “Go,” and very shortly after announced their self-promotion to WGI Percussion Independent World (PIW) class for the 2013 season. Finding success quickly yet again, the GMUID qualified for the 2013 WGI World Class finals, finishing in 8th place with a score of 92.25. Chris Garay led the group in further World Class competition for three seasons starting in 2015, reaching World Class finals again in 2017.
Since the summer of 2017, the GMUID has been under the direction of Travis Peterman. The streak of World Class finals appearances is active through the 2024 competitive season, while the ensemble strives to continue serving the greater Northern Virginia marching percussion community.
